I was trying to close out deer season. My season had gone well and the freezer is full. I got a message from one of my Challenge Course clients asking about the possibility of getting some deer meat. So I was back out. One of my favorite spots is in the fork of a fallen tree at the edge of a hayfield. It’s an easy stealthy approach. The sun has risen twice in that spot with deer bedded down in front of me. Yeah I’m a ninja. So I’m sitting there watching the world and waiting on the deer to move. That’s when my phone starts to wiggle in my pocket. It’s my daughter. She’s on GA time which is an hour ahead and also on LB time which means I should work like a microwave and give almost immediate results.
I whispered “Hello”. She didn’t catch the hint. “Dad amIgoingtoburnmhousedown? (no it’s not a misprint. There are no spaces between her words) Icrawledunderthere…(I'll slow it down for you) I’m tried of not having enough hot hot water. Anyway I took that little panel of and moved some insulation and it started sparking!!!” She is between jobs. Yesterday she was adjusting the heat pump. Today it’s the water heater. (By the way why do we call it a Hot water heater? If the water is hot why do we need to heat it?) I digress.
She finally took a breath and realized I was laughing. Then came the “Where are you?” To which I had to confess I was trying to hunt but laughing so loud picturing her under her house sprayed, by a shower of sparks and the ensuing squealing that I thought maybe I should just go home. I told her that there were two deer in the field and they were laughing at her.
She starts the new job on Monday. But between leaving the job in Rome and starting the job in Dalton she’d found “projects”. She’s not a plumber, HVAC certified technician nor an electrician. She’s trying to solve problems but she’d be better off at HER job and as Andy used to say, “Just call the man.”
Christians get in trouble when we are not doing our jobs and just looking for projects. David should have been at war but was walking on the roof when the whole Bathsheba thing started. Jonah was on a boat going to Tarshish when he should have been sailing for Nineveh. Ananias and Sapphira were worried about what everybody thought about Barnabas when they decided to sell some property.
People get into trouble when they try to fix things they aren’t qualified to fix or even get involved in things that aren’t theirs to fix. We have a “job” to do each day. It’s easy to do the wrong thing when we are just out trying to do some thing. Christians have several directives for making choices about what we do: Ephesians 4:1; Philippians 1:27; I John 1:7.
